Frank Woodruff Buckles
was born in Missouri in 1901. After being turned down by the Marine Corps and then the Navy, the 16-year-old was enlisted into the Army and served overseas in the Ambulance Service. At the Armistice he was assigned to escort enemy prisoners back to Germany. He served in France until 1920.
