Tony Pierro
was born 110 years ago in Forenza, Italy. He emigrated to the U.S. in 1914 and enlisted in the Army in 1918, serving in the deadly Meuse-Argonne offensive in which U.S. fatalities averaged 1,000 lives a day. While reluctant to be interviewed for this program, he provided a rare glimpse into the war's last days. When asked about the secret to a long life, he cited hard work and lots of rest. "If you don't have exercise, you get stiff and you're not worth anything." He lives in Swampscott, Mass. |
