Howard Ramsey
is one of the last U.S. veterans to have seen action in the trenches. He was underweight when he enlisted in 1916, "but my buddy and I went out and ate a bunch of bananas, came back later and we passed." While in France he drove trucks to the front lines. A little French girl once presented him with a lock of hair wrapped in tissue, which he still has to this day. He lives in his hometown of Portland, Ore.
